Pledging for Recycled Plastics in Construction Materials

On the 16th of January 2018, the Commission published a Communication on the European Strategy for Plastics.

The overreaching objective of the Strategy is to rethink and to improve the functioning of the Plastics Value chain, in order to make this material more and more sustainable and circular to keep its value in the product cycles as long as possible, while containing the environmental pollution due to its littering or weak waste management standards. The implementation of the Strategy will be supported by a variety of measures that are described in the Annexes to the Communication.

One of the key element is to help the market for the plastic secondary raw materials to develop.

The Commission has therefore invited the brand owners to commit for increasing the content of recycled plastics in their products in order to send clear signal to the recycling partners.

Annex III explains this pledging exercise by which the Commission calls on stakeholders to come forward with voluntary pledges to boost the uptake of recycled plastics. The objective is to ensure that by 2025 ten million tonnes of recycled plastics find their way into new products on the EU market.

In this context, DG GROW is organising a series of workshop with several stakeholders that operate on different plastic value-chains, in order to incentivise their mobilisation towards this objective and to explain the operative specifications of this initiative.

DG GROW would like to invite you to attend the workshop on Construction materials, that will take place on the 21st of March (10.00-12.30), at the premises of DG GROW (Breydel Building - Avenue D'Auderghem 45, 1040 Bruxelles), Room BREY 14/69.
